CHAPTER 15

A Message from the Dead

One of the most disconcerting aspects of dreaming was how Emilia never remembered the person standing in front of her was dead until after she awoke.

Silas Drakon, the chief agrarian sorcerer, knelt in front of a young Emilia Drakon. His green tunic and trousers had probably collected more dirt- and grass-stains than any other clothing on the island, and a stray, green leaf stuck up out of his light brown hair.

Emilia’s mother often said that agrarian sorcerers were adults who spent their days playing in the dirt.

Emilia doubted anyone ‘played’ as much as Silas did.

“What’s the matter?”

“Nothing,” Emilia lied.

Most adults attempted to make eye-contact with Emilia, though she’d never understood why.

Silas didn’t.

She wondered if he shared her anxiety about it.

Instead, he eyed Emilia’s clasped hands with raised eyebrows. “You won’t show me what’s under there?”

Emilia cast a quick glance at the older children, and Silas followed her gaze. He nodded.

“It’s hard for you, isn’t it?” he said—too quietly for the other kids to hear. “Making friends?”

Emilia blushed.

It wasn’t just hard. It was impossible.

It was a language Emilia could never understand.

But Emilia didn’t have the words to explain that. So, she just nodded.

Silas straightened and addressed the other children. “We’re finished with today’s lesson. You may go.”

As the other children gathered their things and left the field of small plants, Emilia remained on the ground with her hands clasped tightly together.

When a few older children hesitated at the edge of the field—likely just to discuss their evening plans or something—Silas repeated, irritably, “You may go.”

The children took their discussions elsewhere.

Silas knelt, and his pale face entered Emilia’s vision once more. With a nod toward Emilia’s clasped hands, he said, “Now, let me see what you’ve done.”

Emilia braced herself for insults and anger—for the reactions her mother would’ve had. “I messed up.”

To Emilia’s surprise, Silas only said, “Good.”

Emilia looked up, her eyes wide.

“Mistakes are how we learn.”

Emilia had never heard that before.

Silas didn’t even seem to notice her shock. He nodded toward her closed hands. “Let me see.”

Emilia reluctantly opened her hands to reveal the plant that had sprouted from the center of her palm.

Silas winced—possibly because of the redness of her skin or the blood that tried to ooze out between the roots—but he didn’t ridicule her. “It’s because you’re a healer,” he told her. “I know you haven’t taken your runes yet, but this only makes it more obvious.”

Most sorcerers didn’t take their runes until they were far older than Emilia was now, but the leaders had noticed Emilia’s proclivity for healing years ago.

Camila had even begun training her privately.

Advanced studies, she’d called it, with a smile.

“Your style of magic involves stealing something from yourself and giving it to someone else,” Silas explained, “but plant magic isn’t like that.”

Emilia didn’t fully understand that. She only knew the other children didn’t have plants sprouting from their skin.

“Plants aren’t parasites. They’re friends,” Silas said, and Emilia realized he really meant that. “The flower doesn’t want to take from you.
